Tuesday’s Tunes: ‘Hall of Mirrors‘ from Hellraiser II…

Spread the love

Christopher Young’s music for Hellraiser was a more personal score that captured the internal feelings of its characters. Whether it be about the pleasures or the pain the music wanted you to connect with them on an emotional level. The story was mostly a haunted house movie so the music was never allowed to venture out beyond those perimeters. The only moments where the score really become operatic were the parts with the Cenobites and the small chase in hell. And even then it was still holding back.

Which brings me to the score for Hellbound: Hellraiser II. Right from the start we’re thrown into a whirl wind of sights and sounds that make the original film’s score seem like kids stuff. The pounding theme that supports the opening credits lets the audience know that this is going to be a completely different movie and yes it’s going to give use sights that we’ve never seen before. The music accomplishes this as well, especially when the characters venture into Leviathan’s labyrinth.

There’s a lot to love about the score to Hellbound. The music is filled with so many memorable themes that it’s practically impossible to pick which one is the best out of the bunch. But there’s one particular piece of music that captures Leviathan’s Hell and how this God likes to fuck with people’s minds.

The scene where Tiffany goes through a trip into the ‘Hall of Mirrors’ is one of the more creepy pieces of music used in the movie. Leviathan is having fun mocking Tiffany and her inability to express herself and how she’s become this lonely soul. The visual imagery occupied with the music makes this very apparent. The clowns laughing at her, the doll sewing its mouth shut, her reflection in the mirrors, and the clown juggling his eye ball’s, and then finally revealing a crucial part of Tiffany’s past that only confuses and teases her even more. The Hall of Mirrors represents mental torture and Christopher Young’s music captures this beautifully.
