Happy 31st, HELLRAISER!

Spread the love

Hello Friends:
31 years ago, The Prince Charles Cinema hosted a charity premiere of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser. The very next day it would hit cinemas in the UK. The US would have to wait an extra week to see the cenobites fill the screen as mysterious apparitions in an empty room with dark swinging chains from which Frank Cotton hung in pieces. The bare boards of that damp room were a stage where this great Faustian tale would see its most intense moments.

Today we are celebrating the 31st anniversary of the release of Hellraiser, one of the best Horror movies to come out of England in the 80’s Clive Barker had a vision of Hell that subverted the old ideas and populated it with these Surgeons from Beyond, who do not tend to moral punishment but were interested in the nature of sensation and experience.

If you haven’t had the chance yet, I recommend looking up the Leviathan documentary, and look up our own @BarkerCast Commentary Tracks! We’ve done the whole Hellraiser series.

Happy Birthday, Hellraiser!
