Review: Patient K. by Barbie Wilde
The Klingon’s believe that revenge is a dish best served cold. There’s no question that author Barbie Wilde agrees with that statement when it comes to her new short story, Patient K. The first story in Demain Publishing new series called Short Sharp Shocks.
After loosing her left eye in a childhood accident involving a BB gun, Karla Alexander is forced to live the rest of her life wearing a glass eye. When her current ocularist decides to retire, she’s forced to find a new one. Enter Dr. Markham, who promises that he can give her a prostheses that’s more lifelike. During the procedure the doctor sexually assaults her while she’s sedated. Humiliated by the ordeal, she goes home and thinks about how to handle the situation. There she begins to notice her new eye begins to act strange. A tiny golden entity appears in the dead socket of her left eye and it begins to send her signals on how to get revenge.
I don’t want to spoil the gruesome surprises that Barbie has in store for the reader, but I promise she lets Karla and her little friend get down and dirty when it comes to dishing out justice on Dr. Markham. I couldn’t help but enjoy all the nasty things they did to this creep. And when it came to the gruesome finale, I was left with a big smile on my face.
Wilde also touches on an important issue about how people shouldn’t use their job titles as a form of power over others. Some individuals don’t understand the meaning of respect and only care about their own selfish needs. Thankfully, we live an age where this behavior isn’t being tolerated anymore. I believe Wilde uses Karla to represent that voice of intolerance.
If you’re a fan of Wilde’s past work then I’m positive you’ll find a lot to enjoy here. She’s crafted a story that’s a cross between The Punisher and The Twilight Zone. In fact, it’s a story that would’ve made Rod Serling proud.
