Is Tony Todd Still in the Running to Play Candyman?
Last month we reported that actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was set to play the new Candyman in the upcoming ‘spiritual sequel’ to the original film. The news was upsetting to a lot of fans that wanted to see original star Tony Todd return to the role that made him famous. It’s also hard for me to imagine another actor uttering the line,“Be my victim.”
But now director Nia DaCosta has on gone record with the film website Collider stating that earlier reports about Todd being replaced might have been misleading:
Well, it’s been slightly misreported,” DaCosta tells Collider. “I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd. That’s been reported, and I was just like, “I don’t know what to say about this. This is not right.
It sounds like writers Jordan Peele (who’s also producing) and Win Rosenfeld have come up with something clever for the new movie and they don’t want it to leak out. Whatever it maybe, lets hope that it involves Todd being in the movie somehow. It wouldn’t be the same without him.
The new movie’s story will return to the mean streets of Cabrini Green and follow an art dealer that has become obsessed with the Candyman legend.
The new Candyman is set for release by MGM on June 20th, 2020.
