David S. Goyer to Reboot Hellraiser?

Hello Friends:
Some exciting news came out yesterday, especially for Hellraiser fans. It’s been announced by the Spyglass Media Group that a new Hellraiser movie is in the works, and David S. Goyer will be writing the script and producing this project. The Spyglass Media Group was recently launched by former MGM chief Gary Barber, and Warner Bros. has invested in an equity stake with Spyglass a couple of weeks ago in April — another of Spyglass’ investors is Lantern Entertainment, which gives Spyglass access to the Weinstein company library of films, so there’s your connection to the Hellraiser franchise.

Gary Barber said this Hellraiser will be a “loyal, yet evolved reimagining” of the original film, and hopefully judging by the talent attached to it and the intent to give it a worldwide theatrical distribution could breathe new life and value to a franchise that’s been suffering through the contractually obligated sequels that have become increasingly lower in budget as the years progressed, so the Weinstein Company could hold on to the franchise rights, waiting for the right time to relaunch it. Now the wheels are turning again.

Barber said, “Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative ‘Hellraiser’ haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of ‘Hellraiser.’ ”

Deadline also reports:

Spyglass will finance and develop the pic for worldwide theatrical distribution. Keith Levine will serve as a producer alongside Goyer, under the Phantom Four banner. Chris Stone, Vice President, Development & Production for Spyglass, will oversee the project.

Goyer co-wrote the Batman franchise scripts with Christopher Nolan, as well as another trilogy of scripts for the Blade franchise, and he is working on an upcoming Terminator film as well. He is also the showrunner for the Foundation series based on Isaac Asimov’s books for Apple TV. This should be interesting!
