Spread the love

Discussion: Halloween — 1978 John Carpenter, Debra Hill

Show Notes

Addendum to Notes: The movie Ed Martinez had trouble remembering the title was called “Peeping Tom” (1960). It predates all the other slasher movies. It came out a couple of months before Psycho.

Nina here: I was a babysitter during this era; while we did take refrigerator liberties, not all of us would have had the nerve to smoke a joint in someone’s car before getting to the job, lol! The scene of Jamie Lee with her hands in a pumpkin while the kid watches TV is accurate! A lot has been said over the years about the killing of movie teenagers that had sex, or drank, etc. But in this movie, an argument can be made that it was the baby sitter’s negligence of the child that irked The Shape. Jamie Lee’s character is engaged with the children, not herself, not washing her own clothes, ignoring the child, inviting friends over to party, etc. She survives in part, I think, because the killer targets the neglectful girl first on his killing spree.

Ed asks, What ever happened to the boyfriend of the first victim (sister), that the killer child Michael doesn’t kill because he runs out of the house post-coitus. Who was he? What was his name? He is the only survivor of the young Michael Myers.

Hi Nina. I agree that it may be possible that the creators defined the lead character as responsible and likable (totally) we root for her as a survivor, but Michael tries even harder to kill her, and stalks her before any of the others, so don’t think he cares about their good qualities. He just wants to kill babysitters and their friends.

Good question. I guess since he didn’t really witness the murder, his character sort of fades into oblivion.
