Everything We Know About “Hellraiser: Revival”

Spread the love

Hellraiser fans have long been waiting for something to come along that adapts the multi-layered lore of the Hellraiser Universe. From early attempts that never materialized, on the NES (1990-1992) to the PC, using the id Tech 0 engine (Wolfenstein 3D) for example, there’s been a history of attempts at adapting the world of the unforgettable Cenobites and its labyrinthine mythology, along with the themes of pain and pleasure. During the CD-ROM boom of the mid-1990s, rumors swirled about various multimedia Hellraiser projects. CD-ROM technology seemed ideal for the franchise’s graphic imagery and puzzle mechanics. Barker himself was exploring interactive media at this time— concepts like Clive Barker’s Undying, involving a clan of siblings hiding a terrible secret (EA/Dreamworks Interactive, 2001).

While Undying and later Jericho (Codemasters, 2007) embodied some of Clive Barker’s ideas, no Hellraiser-branded game materialized in the 1990s. The complexity of licensing rights and the franchise’s reputation as many sequels crept on, likely played a role in discouraging major studios. However, the Hellraiser lore and imagery—chains, hooks, and the iconic puzzle box—seems almost tailor-made for the interactive medium of video games. We did have very exciting moments like the introduction of the Hellpriest in Dead by Daylight (Behavior Interactive, 2021). Yet, despite decades of opportunity, a fully realized Hellraiser video game has remained elusive until recently.

Hellraiser: Revival marks the first true video game adaptation of the classic horror franchise, helmed by Saber Interactive (in collaboration with Boss Team Games) and backed by creator Clive Barker himself. This will be a single-player, first-person survival-horror action game, designed to embrace Hellraiser’s signature bleak themes of pain, pleasure, and desire. Check the Red Band Trailer below:

You play as Aidan, a biker that belongs to a gang called Hellraisers, whose girlfriend Sunny has been dragged into Leviathan’s Labyrinth after opening the mysterious Genesis Configuration puzzle box, and your mission will be to rescue her. The Genesis Configuration grants Aidan supernatural abilities—but remember: there’s no free lunch and the cenobites have eternity to know your flesh if you fail… So far, it seems that the game will blend melee and ranged combat, fighting wretches, deviants and the Scarlet Church cultists, puzzle-solving, and combat tactics using the box’s powers as well as earthly weapons.

Clive Barker was deeply involved in crafting the narrative, ensuring it captures the essence of Hellraiser’s aesthetic: Working on the first true Hellraiser game has been a venture deep into the recesses of my darkest imaginings,” said Clive Barker, horror legend and creator of Hellraiser, who has been a guiding hand for the game’s unique story in the Hellraiser universe. “The dedication that Saber and Boss Team Games have shown is nothing short of remarkable. They’ve immersed themselves in the Hellraiser universe, capturing its essence—the seductive pull of suffering, the beauty within the grotesque—and forged a narrative that invites players to step beyond the threshold. I’m eager for both the curious and the damned to experience this new chapter in the Hellraiser mythos, where every moment balances on the brink of nightmare and revelation.

Hellraiser is the quintessential horror franchise, and lends itself perfectly to a video game, said Matthew Karch, CEO and co-founder of Saber Interactive. “Saber has had success with horror IPs in the past, and working alongside Clive to create tense gameplay and a new story that delves into the twisted depths of pain and pleasure has been a real treat. We look forward to opening up the gates of hell.”

Nenad Tomic (Executive Producer) added some more insight“The game is inspired by the first two Hellraiser movies, drawing from their atmosphere, themes, and mythos. However, its plot is not directly connected to the movies. Instead, it should be seen as a new story set within the Hellraiser universe – one that stays true to its lore while offering a fresh and terrifying experience for both longtime fans and newcomers alike…
“Clive Barker has been deeply involved with the game from the very beginning. His guidance and intimate understanding of the Hellraiser universe have been instrumental in shaping every aspect of the experience. From the visual style and story motifs to the lore and character personalities, his creative input has ensured that the game remains authentic to the spirit of Hellraiser. He has worked closely with us, helping to refine our ideas so that they align seamlessly with his original vision, making this game a true extension of his dark and imaginative world.”

The announcement trailer and hands-on previews show us some pretty nightmarish environments—from nightclubs turned eldritch to medical-horror spaces. Expect graphic imagery including flayed bodies, corpse manipulation, and brutal combat sequences. Gameplay previews at Gamescom 2025 noted explicit gore, including scenes where flesh is peeled off— even demo players were given vomit bags due to the graphic intensity. I can’t help but recall that the previews of Hellraiser: Hellbound also had Hellbound Fright Bags handed to people back in 1988.
