BarkerCast Presents: Will the “Gods and Monsters” Bluray Please Stand Up!
“To Clayton. Friend?” “Friend?”
The theme of friendship is what makes Bill Codon’s powerful drama Gods and Monsters such a emotional experience. The film follows the fictionalized final days of director James Whales life as he closely develops a relationship with his gardener named Clay Boone. What makes the movie so memorable for me is the way Condon expresses such honesty with his characters. As much as I love Ian McKellan as Whales, it’s Brendan Fraser who steals the show. I related more to his character because he captured the part of humanity that doesn’t know its place in the world. It’s only until he learns from James in the very important ‘gas mask’ scene that he needs to grow up and be a man. To face his fears about life and live it.
It’s surprising that such a beautiful film doesn’t have a bluray release!?! In my opinion it should’ve been included in Universal’s 100th anniversary mega bluray box set. It was the perfect opportunity, but they chose to include films like The Bourne Identity and Buck Privates instead. Two films that have earned there place in film history no doubt, but so has Gods and Monsters. Condon won a Oscar for ‘Best Adapated Screenplay’ from Chistopher Braum’s novel Father of Frankenstien. Surely, that means something?
Of course, maybe I’m jumping the gun here. Maybe Universal is planning a release. Maybe even for 2019? Sometimes these releases pop up out of nowhere. If they are I hope they give the film a wonderful new HD transfer along with some brand new features. I think new interviews with all the key ensemble would be nice, but even if they don’t that’s fine with me. I’d just like to add this movie that I adore so much to my growing HD collection.
To end this article, I’d like to talk about the film’s ending. The final scene with Boone walking in the rain like Frankenstein’s monster is about the power of friendship and how we should never forget the people that we love. It moves me to tears every time I watch it. That’s the power of Gods and Monsters and I hope Universal has a released planned for this timeless classic sooner than later.
